Easy Homemade Play Dough

Homemade play dough was a staple of my childhood. Grandma Roma would fold in whatever color I chose to dye the dough, and then I would wait (very impatiently) for it to cool so we could play together. I had a big thrifted box of cookie cutters that she’d saved over the years and an old wooden rolling pin so I could play pretend play dough bakery. I made lots of play dough pies!

This fun craft for kids is super easy to make and is so fun for little hands to knead. It comes together quickly and keeps well. Make a rainbow of colors with this better than name brand play dough!

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Combine water, salt, and food coloring in a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Bring to a boil.
  3. Remove from heat and add flour, alum, and oil.
  4. Mix with a rubber spatula as the mixture cools. Once it's cool enough to touch, you can knead it by hand on the countertop, if desired. Mix until a cohesive dough is formed.
  5. Allow to cool to room temperature.
  6. When cool, store in an airtight container. Homemade play dough will keep for approximately 4 to 6 weeks at room temperature.

Notes

The recipe as written for this play dough is not considered taste safe for your little ones. To make this dough taste safe, please omit the alum. Note that the dough without alum likely won't take color from the food coloring as well, and the dough, if tasted, will be extremely salty regardless.
